about us |
Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings I was born in the Sudan and then moved to the UK when I was 12. Consequently, my first language was Arabic and later I learnt English and finally BSL. I was born hearing but became deaf after contracting meningitis at the age of 4. I have previously worked for a number of organisations including Friends for Young Deaf and deafPLUS and have worked in both an advice and advocacy capacity as well as the ethnic development officer. I have also worked with Shape as a mentor to young, developing deaf and disabled artists. In 2003, I founded the Deaf Women’s Art Group called ‘Resonant”. Since 2007 we have held an annual exhibition showcasing the work of various Deaf female artists and recently held our first international exhibition in Paris which was an amazing experience. Prior to this, we were successful in achieving Arts Council funding for a joint project with an organisation called Space to provide training and to develop integration of deaf and hearing artists. My new challenge for 2011 has been joining the CommunicationID Team. My role is the Marketing and Contracts Officer. I am responsible for promoting the company and to secure interpreting, training and consultancy contracts and then for the management of these contracts and also the administration involved. In my spare time, I love travelling and also attending art exhibitions, theatre and jazz music performances – really anything that is visual! Oh... and I’ve recently become a Mummy! |
